Mini Calla Lilies vs Regular Calla Lilies

Posted on Wednesday, December 17th, 2014 and is filed under Calla Lilies, DIY Flowers Tips & Tricks, News

Mini Calla Lilies vs Regular Calla Lilies

One of our frequently asked questions is What is the difference between mini calla lilies and regular calla lilies?

Regular Calla Lilies, Standard Calla Lilies, or Large Sized Calla Lilies

Are all terms that are used to refer to the classic white calla lily. The classic white calla lily has a large trumpet shaped bloom on a large, thick sturdy stem. Their sturdy stems make them ideal to use in tall centerpieces.  When fully open, the classic calla lily bloom measure more than 5 inches. The stem length of a classic calla can measure up to 35 inches. Classic calla lilies come in three different colors: white, green and a lavender-pink.

Mini Calla Lilies, Mini Callas, or Colored Calla Lilies

We refer to mini calla lilies as colored calla lilies. Mini calla lilies can be not so mini, some varieties have stems that measure as long as classic calla lilies. Colored calla lilies have much thinner stems and smaller blooms then classic calla lilies. Colored callas typically have stems that measure from 12 to 24 inches and blooms that measure up to 4 inches. Fresh cut colored calla blooms do not need time to open like classic calla lilies and come in a wide array of colors; white, cream, lavender, pink, purple, rose, red, yellow, peach and orange. Colored calla lilies are great to use in vase arrangements, center pieces, bridal bouquets and boutonnieres.

Amaryllis belladonna Flower Meaning

Posted on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014 and is filed under News

Amaryllis belladonna Flower Meaning

Amaryllis belladonna

Amaryllis belladonna is named after the Greek beauty Amaryllis and bella donna which means beautiful lady in Italian.  Botanically belladonna also means poisonous.

According to the Greek mythology,  Amaryllis was a virginal nymph, timid and shy but with a spine of steel. She fell head over heels in love with Alteo, an icy-hearted shepherd. Alteo reputed to be as handsome as Apollo and as strong as Hercules.  She was determined to be true only to him, no matter what the consequences. Indifferent to her charms, Alteo claimed his only desire was that a new flower be brought to him, a flower that had never before existed in the world. Amaryllis consulted the Oracle at Delphi and was instructed to pierce her heart with a golden arrow at Alteo’s door. So she did. Dressed in maidens white, for thirty consecutive nights, dripping blood all the while. The shepherd finally opened his door to discover a flower which had sprung from the blood of her heart. The flower was named Amaryllis.

Here we have the history of the introduction of Amaryllis belladonna to Greece from South Africa. It caused quite a commotion then and still does today in Western Gardens for anyone fortunate enough to find them for sale. It was all types of trade (spice, gold, diamonds, and sugar which in turn brought slaves from Africa to other parts of the world to work in the sugar and tobacco fields) that is very important to the distribution of the Amaryllis Belladonna as well as all South African Plants. Belladonnas were widely cultivated by the Romans and Greeks and later by the seafaring and trading powers Portugal, Spain and Italy. The bulbs are still found in gardens of nobles in major cities, trading ports, church gardens and around plantation houses of wealthy merchants.

Amaryllis belladonna are also known as “Naked Ladies” because the greenery comes up in Spring then dies back, as it goes dormant for the summer. In late summer a naked spike that resembles a cobra emerges out of the ground and then pops open produces many blooms that are a soft pink color. They smell like bubble gum and last for a long time in the garden and make a great long lasting cut flower.

Fun Facts about Calla Lilies: History, Significance & More

Posted on Tuesday, June 17th, 2014 and is filed under News

Contrary to its name, the calla lily is not actually a true lily. Sometimes known as the pig lily, trumpet lily, or arum lily, the calla lily begins to blossom in late spring. It is an extremely unique flower that has been sought after for centuries, not only for its beauty but for the different meanings behind it.

The name calla lily is derived from a Greek word meaning beauty. It is native to Africa and though it is famous for its delicate appearance, it is a remarkably resilient flower that has been known to survive frost and can continue to grow in water. Although calla lilies are most commonly white, they also come in a variety of different colors. The colored varieties are called mini calla lilies and come in such colors as yellow, pink, purple, green, black and orange. Each color calla lily has its own meaning or connotation. For example, pink represents admiration and appreciation while purple denotes passion and is a color often associated with royalty. The color white usually represents purity and innocence, making white calla lilies a very popular flower choice for wedding bouquets.

Because the calla lily blossoms in late spring, they have come to represent rebirth and youth. Additionally, the cone-like flowers often play a role in the Christian holiday of Easter as a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection. The calla lily has been depicted in many different paintings and works of art throughout history with the Virgin Mary or the Angel of Annunciation and as such, the calla lily is also associated with holiness, faith and purity. They are also often the perfect choice for wedding decorations because they are traditional symbols of marital bliss, true devotion and divinity. Calla lilies have also been used at funerals to represent the purification of the departed soul and sympathy. Given their history and different connotations, calla lilies are the perfect choice for occasions that involve new beginnings, rebirths or major transitions.
